Experience

Susanne Tanner has built up a varied practice since coming to the Bar in 2000. Prior to that she was a solicitor in the Dispute Resolution team at Burness in Edinburgh dealing with a wide range of civil, commercial, personal injury and employment matters.

The majority of her advocacy instructions are to act as lead counsel. She has Outer House and Sheriff Court experience in a wide range of civil cases: proofs, procedure rolls, debates and motions. She has considerable experience of a wide range of personal injury actions including employers' liability, occupiers' liability and industrial diseases. She is often instructed in high value cases. She also deals with a range of civil actions including boundary disputes and contract disputes. She is frequently instructed as a Commissioner both in relation to evidence and documents. Susanne extended her qualifications by gaining Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in 2000.

In her criminal practice, Susanne Tanner has both prosecution and defence experience in High Court trials and procedural hearings including cases relating to murder, drugs and serious sexual offences. She has juniored in a number of high profile criminal trials for both prosecution and defence. Susanne has defence experience in jury trials in the Sheriff Courts and she has appeared as an ad hoc Procurator Fiscal Depute in prosecution work in various Sheriff Courts. All of this court appearance work has provided valuable advocacy experience, in particular in relation to examination and cross-examination of witnesses, which experience enhances her civil practice.

Susanne has regular academic commitments including lecturing Criminal Law and Evidence on the Law degree at Napier University. This keeps her at the forefront of changes in the law in these areas and broadens her public speaking experience.
