The Key
We believe that best practice can only be achieved by continuously investing in training and education. That is why Ampersand has developed an exciting lecture series called 'The Key'. The Key will cover a wide range of topics and is free to attend.
The Key is a long term commitment from Ampersand to deliver informative and relevant training to the Scottish legal and other professions. The Stable's links with some of Scotland's leading legal academics ensures that The Key remains comprehensive, relevant, and up to date.
As well as these high profile public events we provide bespoke in-house training at law firms' own premises. You can speak to our clerks about arranging this bespoke in house training at your organisation.

Advocacy Skills workshop
Edinburgh, Faculty of Advocates Mackenzie Building, Old Assembly Close, 172 High Street
In conjunction with the Law Society of Scotland, Ampersand has arranged this Advocacy skills training.
As an art, advocacy consists predominantly of learnt skills. The reading of books and articles about it, with references to the legendary names and passages from masterful cross examinations, is often entertaining but seldom that instructive. The learning of skills is most effectively done in workshop situations where the “dos and don’ts” of advocacy can be put into context and experienced in action.
On this course, participants will get the opportunity to do that, as well as hearing concise talks on the techniques of examination in chief, cross examination and making closing submissions, from three experienced Advocates from Ampersand. Each will get an advance set of papers for a mock case and, on the day, will conduct a short examination and cross examination in a courtroom role playing exercise, which will be reviewed by one of the Ampersand Advocates.
The focus will be on advocacy skills, rather than legal technicalities, and the aim will be to learn while enjoying the process. The course is designed to assist practitioners, whether they are involved in civil, criminal or tribunal work and whether they have had the chance to appear regularly or rarely. Recent participants have ranged from trainees to senior partners. Even the best golfers practise their swing.
