Marathon Effort for Cancer Research

Ampersand's Maria Maguire QC is taking part in the Shine marathon in Glasgow on 10 September 2011 to raise money for cancer research.

Cancer Research UK is the world's leading charity dedicated to conquering cancer through finding new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease. It is entirely funded by the public.

Shine is a unique night-time walking marathon.

Maria said: "I am going to Shine for all those family and friends who have suffered or are suffering because of this devastating illness. In the past year I have learned that there are many able and talented researchers who are looking for answers.

There is so much being discovered about cancer and some very sophisticated work going on. The more I looked into it the more I realised that research was the way forward.

Cancer affects so many people and I have had friends and family who suffered from the disease. My father died from cancer. So while it's too late for some people we can help save people in the future.

I have done the Moonwalk so I know I can manage the 26 miles, although it will be difficult and I haven't been doing as much training as I should have, I am determined to do it."

Maria's original target was £1,000 but she has managed to raise more than that already and intends to revise her target upwards.
